Christmas Balls with Secret Ingredient

I created a stand for my Christmas Ornaments by placing a large circle of glue on my glue pad & placing the ball in the circle of glue..... When it dries well, the ball will remove easily with the glue intact & voila you have a bottom that allows the ball to sit perfectly.... I bought little vinyl sayings at Walmart & placed them on.....Perfect little homemade gifts......Wouldn't they look pretty as place settings.......

The secret ingredient is liquid Pledge floor shine .....It helps if two people work this craft or be very prepared if doing by yourself..... I had all the caps off & the bottles opened before starting.... Pour the liquid floor shine into the clear ball & swirl around... Dump all the liquid back into the original bottle.... Quickly pour in the Martha Stewart fine glitter using a fair amount.... Make sure the entire inside of the ball is covered with the glitter...The secret here is to work quickly before the floor shine dries....Place cap back on your glitter ball....I used my 40% off coupon at Michael's to buy the Martha Stewart Fine Iridescent Glitter....I bought some little stickers from Walmart that say things like, Smile, Wonder, Love etc. & they are just adorable......

I bought my clear balls in Michaels at the Cambridge store as they were on for less than half price & they had a large supply.....

Lighted Christmas Gift

Materials Needed

Clear plastic tote ( I used 11"x14")

Strand of clear Christmas Lights(25)

Red Plastic Outdoor Ribbon(Canadian Tire)

Frosted Contact Paper(Home Depot)

Take your tote(on the back at the bottom) & cut an x opening just large enough so the light plug can stick out.....Just push the plug out & leave the lights inside the tote...

Cut the frosted contact paper....to fit your side of the tote...Overlap the corners.... I found it easier to cut each panel separately........The frosted paper makes it look nicer imho... You can't see the light strand as well & it creates a warm glow....Stick paper on all sides on the outside of the tote......


We used heavy clear tape & taped the lights to the insides of the tote walls... This would be optional.....

Place lid on...

Tie the plastic ribbon all around the tote & a bow on the top....... This can be used outdoors as the tote protects the lights & the ribbon is plastic......so it is very weather proof. Our daughter liked hers so well she uses it in her front hallway.......& it looks charming inside as well.....

Pumpkin Lights for Our Grandchildren Made from a Small Canning Jar

First of all I made one with a big mayo jar & I just didn't like it.... I wanted to make it smaller so I looked around & saw my small canning jars... Perfecto!!!

I bought some orange tissue paper & cut them into about 2" strips...long enough so the bottom of the jar can be covered...Cut on the folds of the tissue paper. I used a light decoupage glue(Anitas) & started in small areas to apply it...Just water down thick decoupage glue if necessary....Using just one layer of the tissue paper, place the tissue strips straight up & down; use your sponge brush to apply gently as the tissue is very fragile at this point.....& it will tear off if you use your fingers.... Pat the tissue down gently too with the brush......

Here is the method I used to make the appearance of creases that pumpkins have; overlap the tissue for the width of the groove you want...... The double tissue covering these sections are darker & simulate the creases a pumpkin has...

You can paint a Halloween face on but I googled cute pumpkin face & printed off the face....I cut the eyes & mouth out from the picture & decoupaged them on... I used the back of the canning jar for the face...Cut out two faces if you wish to have a 2 sided pumpkin....You could invert the mouth to make the other side a sad face..... Brush on a coat of High Gloss decoupage....when tissue is completely dry on the jar.... I used Aleenes.

I placed a battery tea light inside so it would glow in the dark.... when turned on...I glued my canning jar lid & cap together & punched a hole in the lid big enough so the tea light flame only could fit through.... I glued the tea light to the cap as well..... This little tealight flame gives the appearance of the stem of the pumpkin & it lights up which gives it extra charm...

Shadow Boxes for Our Grandchildren~Olympics 2010

I bought three pair of the Olympic mittens with the Vancouver 2010 logo & our Canadian Maple Leaf on them....that are so famous.... I have placed them each in a shadow box to keep as a memento......Our granddaughter is 10 almost 11 & will remember them as she had a pair to wear as well.... Our two grandsons who are 2 & 1 will not remember them......

I bought the shadow boxes at Michaels this week.....

Repair made to my Toile Duvet Cover

Unfortunately I spilt some dark finger nail polish on my duvet cover... Nothing would take it out after many attempts.....I decided I would cover it instead.... My duvet cover is a creamy white so I took some Warm White Acrylic Paint & mixed it with Light Buttermilk... When mixed I added some Fabric Paint Medium & blended again.... I then took a brush & touched the spots that needed covering.... I smudged it with my finger as well.....& I can barely find the spot.... No one would ever know the difference.... I love my Duvet Cover & was heartsick to think I ruined it but alas the day was saved......

Wreath Made From a Paper Back Book

Here is a wreath I made with Reader's Digest Condensed Books..... The pages are a really different shade than just plain white.... They have a peachy tone to them so I thought it would look perfect in our bedroom.... It blends in with the curtains nicely.....

Here is the link on how to make the wreath from a paper back book....... I think this is just a stunning wreath.......It looks so beautiful hung on your wall..... Of course I did mine a little differently than Lindsay but it is the same with everything, you do it your way.... I made a very big one which just looks so beautiful & this one is a smaller wreath.....Just remember that whatever form you pick the wreath will double in size..... Patience is needed for this project as it is so time consuming....I found filling in at the end makes all the difference in the world but I consistently kept the S shape with the paper....The dark hue in the centre is just the shadow effect of the printed word.......It depends on the angle you look at it.....It is a wreath you can hang up all year round or for Christmas you can spray it with glue & sprinkle on Diamond Dust.....

Rose Spa Cloth

1..Knit a spa cloth/dish cloth.... I like to knit the Bee Stitch or the Rose Stitch http://www.knittingknonsense.com/beestitchcloth.html as there are little protusions that make it look like a cabbage rose.....This rose is a Spa Cloth so I used Bernat CottonTots...

3. Get 3 or as many as you prefer very small elastics for holding back your hair...Crochet all around the elastic with a chain st.... till it is very full... In every chain st. crochet 5 treble crochets until the elastic is full.... The treble stitches make it look like long rose petals....

4. Place scrunchies on the bottom part of the rose & adjust to make them look like rose petals.....Some I pointed downwards to look like a fully opened rose....You will have extra scrunchies around when needed..... Makes a nice double gift.....

Crocheted Textured Dishcloth

This was my first crocheted dishcloth ever... It really intrigued me when I saw the pattern & I knew instantly I had to try it..... In the beginning my cloth just did not look like the picture in the pattern..... I finally figured out that you crochet in the front loop for the textured look & to make the textured row stand out you crochet into the back loop of the same stitch.... You never turn the pattern either... I just had to keep count of how many bars I had so I didn't get the great slant going on the left side..... Crocheting around the sides help to make the cloth look even nicer.....

My Blocking Technique

Letters really need to be blocked well as they will show so much better.... 


Place cloth or bookmark on table & generously spray with water.... Take a tea towel & place your hands all over it to flatten it out so it lays nice & even; then spray with water again......Let the water soak in for about 20 minutes... I now use the handle end of a wooden spoon....... & press down all around the cloth...Using the end of a knitting needle(this is your fine tuning) I then press around the letters & inside the letters till the areas around the letters are quite flat...This makes the letters pop.... I move it to where I am going to take the picture & flatten some more just around the letters... Let the cloth dry overnight as this makes the cloth look better too.... The yarn relaxes & the cloth will pop even more.... hope this helps....& don't be afraid to spend time doing this as the efforts are well worth it......
Your cloth or bookmark will look so much nicer for presenting...

Fabric Decoupage Bag & Knitted Hooded Bath Towel

I saw some fabric decoupage at Michaels & I knew I had the perfect project for it.....I covered a black carry bag that I had kicking around for a long time with some left over Winnie the Pooh material..... I coated the outside as well & it feels just like canvas......I couldn't imagine what difference the fabric podge would make but it sure is nice. The bag will be so durable & stain resistant.....I would sure use this product again but the next time I would just leave it long enough to air out so the glue smell is minimized.......before gifting....

For my hooded baby towel I knit grandmother's favourite dishcloth pattern on circular needles....size 5 Canadian or UK(US 8)When I increased the stitch I placed my yarn over on the opposite side of the needle so there would not be an small hole left.... I don't want baby to get his little fingers caught in one of the holes... I knit it til I had 100 stitches before decreasing....I knit it in CottonTots by Bernat so it is nice & soft.....For the little hood I cast on about 38 stitches & decreased 1 st at the beginning of the needle only... on every row...I off set the decrease by knitting 2 st. first before knitting 2 together....I sewed it into place & it looks like it was knitted in 1 piece....of course I had to make our new grandson some washcloths to match again with CottonTots...... As baby grows I will just make bigger towels by increasing to more stitches... It would make a nice blanket too......

Chris has a new grandson, Dakota Dale & she asked me to design a cloth with his name on it as well as the birth date & time.... What a clever idea Chris!!! She is going to present these to her new grandson in a few days when she sees him for the first time!!!! Congratulations, Chris.... I know it will be thrilling......

Here is the completed afghan Liz made for her grandson's upcoming wedding... I love how Liz incorporated the squares to make 1 big square.... You did a beautiful job Liz & should be very proud of your work.....

These squares will be knit into a wedding afghan..... Wonderful idea Liz...... I hope to see pictures when you have completed it......

Something I always wanted to try & I finally did.....

Purse made from red plastic bags(Zellers) & black cotton.

I don't have a set pattern for my bags I just make them up as I go along.... The red one I did cast on 24 st.... I use two large needles one being a lot bigger than the other just for effect... They called it Condo knitting when it was the rage...I knit it as deep as I would like & fold inside out & sew together with black cotton yarn..... I lined the red bag with black duct tape(you can get all kinds of colours at Canadian Tire).... You can see I ran out before doing the flap....Make the flap by decreasing 1 st each end of the needle....I knit handle by casting on 4 stitches & knit to desired length & then cast off.... Sew to the sides & voila a spiffy little bag/purse.....You can have a new purse every day of the week..... Eat your heart out Paris Hilton!!!

A break over Christmas afforded me some time to knit involving recyled material......The pink bag I looked up plarn on You Tube & learn't how to make plarn... It is so much fun & relaxing but time consuming......I don't like the crochet look so I used two different sized large knitting needles & mixed in an odd ball of yarn I had around never to be used.....I felt I needed to give the bag stabilty....Voila, I had a purse.....

I read that VHS tape comes up nicely & it surely did....... It is already cut evenly for you & is already on a spool..... How easy is that!! I added some cotton yarn in black for stabilty.... It left little openings as I used the big needles again & I didn't want things falling between the cracks.....I duct taped the entire inside with matching black duct tape.... The duct tape makes the purse stand up so nicely & nothing will get through that baby.....I didn't use the VHS tape for the handle as I felt it would be too rough on your hands but I double stranded some cotton yarn.

How I Did My Double Knitting~

Hold the two strands of cotton (ww) together & cast on 25 st. Your work will become two sided using this method. Your front side will be knit & the back side will be purl on the inside but it will be stockingnette on the outside....You knit 1 (using front colour) then purl 1 (using back colour). Trust me it works. The secret is to move both yarns together at the front even tho you just use 1 strand & then move both strands back & purl with the 1 strand, making sure you have the right colour if you are using two colours... You are really knitting an empty pocket that will only be joined at the sides & top & bottom. You eventually get a rythm & it feels like weaving & knitting.... At the start I made so many mistakes..... (1 stitch would be the wrong colour in amongst all the others..... practice makes it much easier..... I am a stickler for getting something to work & have way too much patience at times but I can now make one in no time.......

Cut a double thickness piece (so you don't get burnt) of heat resistant material to fit inside the empty pocket...Insert insulated material in the empty pocket & then sew the top together....of the potholder.... I bought my heat resistant material at Walmart... It is what is used for ironing board covers....
Crochet a small loop in one corner for hanging up....

I crocheted a picot border around the edges...Use any pattern you wish......

Crochet Picot Border

Skip over 2 stitches…starting with right side facing you....In next stitch (Chain 2 st., 1 hdc, 1sc in same st… skip over next 2 st.) Repeat this pattern(in brackets) around the sides of the cloth… Join & sew in ends…

Hdc is half double crochet. Wrap yarn around needle as if doing double crochet & pull through all three stitches…


Paint on the SnowMan

Using fabric paints I painted on the snowmen & the snowflakes...I outlined the snowmen in black & painted on the face, hat, scarf & arms.... Make matching dishcloths & you will have a gorgeous gift......Fabric paint does not wash off..... If you use fabric paint on dishcloths the paint becomes an excellant scrubber factor..... My Snowmen have lasted 2 years now....
